It is a clear action-based platform that makes reporting intuitive and easy, resulting in quick intervention to improve the lives of stray dogs.

Major Findings:

Infrastructure & Funding:

Infrastructure & Funding:

  • Most NGOs face significant infrastructure limitations and budget constraints.

  • They prioritize cases based on their severity/urgency, with sick dogs requiring longer stays and further saturating already limited capacity.

Shelter Overcrowding:

Shelter Overcrowding:

  • Both NGOs and government shelters suffer from a lack of space leading to overcrowding, increased disease spread, and worsened conditions for the dogs.

Lack of Clarity:

Lack of Clarity:

  • A lot of people don’t have the knowledge or resources to take any action or contribute from their end.

  • People don’t want to take actions that might inadvertently make the situation worse.

Public Perception:

Public Perception:

  • The public perception of street dogs is divided.

  • While some fear them, some view them as a menace, others show compassion and volunteer to help.

The problem..

In Indian residential communities, street dogs are a shared presence, but there is no shared, persistent system to record, track, or coordinate their welfare

The insights from the user interviews, surveys and competitor analysis were affinity mapped. These themes then helped define the main flows and features of the app.

User Testing

User Testing

The users found it confusing to navigate through the reporting a dog in need flow.

  • The users got confused between reporting an emergency and an injury and the difference between them.

  • Users found it difficult to classify what is a severe vs not so severe injury.

  • There were issues regarding the hierarchy of information, some of the important information required more steps, which later I made upfront and more discoverable.

  • I also changed the copywriting to ensure that it is clear, and does not make users think too much.

  • The visual language was also changed to have higher contrast and better readability.

This is Poonch :)

The vision is for this app to be adopted society-wide, scalable across cities and potentially beyond.

Get to know a dog :)

See a dog with a QR collar?

Scan it and access basic information about the dog right away.

  • Users can view the dog's information immediately without friction.

  • Then, if they want more details, they're gently nudged to download the app for the full profile.

Report a dog in need

Report a dog in need

Report any injured or sick dog, or emergencies with or without a collar.

  • Users need to upload close-up images or videos showing the injury or medical issue.

  • For less severe cases, available volunteers step in to help, reducing the burden on overcrowded shelters and NGOs.

Adopt a dog :)

Now that the dog has a digital record and context, the platform provides a clear, simple way to adopt or foster street dogs.

  • It also helps share information about dogs up for adoption with a larger community, even outside the local area.

  • There are two interaction modes: grid-based browsing and swiping, so users can see one dog at a time with a larger visual area.

  • According to their preference, they can switch between the two and find what works for them.

Reflection

Reflection

Stray dog population is a systemic and pressing issue. It is not something that can be solved, rather it needs to be managed humanely.

One of my biggest learnings was the importance of giving users flexibility. When someone is stressed or dealing with an emergency, they shouldn’t have to think too much. Design needs to guide them with clarity and confidence.

One of my biggest learnings was the importance of giving users flexibility. When someone is stressed or dealing with an emergency, they shouldn’t have to think too much. Design needs to guide them with clarity and confidence.

Another key learning was identifying a niche within a much larger problem. Within the broad themes of stray dog crisis, to identify a point of intervention was challenging.

This project also made me think about how we approach constraints.

For example, no one is going to download an app during a stressful situation. To overcome this, it was critical that the onboarding is as efficient as possible so that downloading and setting it up doesn’t feel like a hassle.

Since this was a solo project, the thoughtful feedback and guidance from my facilitator, friends and users on whom I tested helped me a lot. I would like to thank them for pushing me to keep thinking and refining my work.

What's next?

What's next?

  • I want to test the final screens with users as well as execute new flows (blogs, location tracking).

  • Language and accessibility are some areas that I want to further develop.

  • The app will often be used outdoors, in harsh sunlight, so I need to refine the visual system keeping that in mind.
